At the ripe old age of 8 my son has decided it's time to move out of the house.
Don't get me wrong, I would rather him live at home with us but when you're ready, you're ready. I wouldn't want to get in the way of his dreams.
Dreams, I explained to him, that involve possibly living on the street, sleeping on the ground.Hence the pillow. He's no boy scout but he's not stupid.
I begged him to stay, telling him he was too young to want to earn a living (per SC child labor law section 41 chapter 13).
I'm sure by now you're wondering why he would choose to leave his seemingly decent life - one that includes his own personal computer in his room, a playstation2 & xbox 360 w/tons of games to play, a PSP, bicycle, scooter, trampoline, trips to the movies, amusement parks, zoos, aquariums, battleships, etc.
The mean mommy, of course.
I asked him to write his third and final book report due the first day of school this coming Monday.
It's not like I just decided one day to make summer miserable by coming up with a reading list, and requiring book reports on 3 of those books. Or decided to make him journal his entire summer week by week just so he could cry and yell that I'm a mean mommy every time I ask him to do it.
Because while that might sound extremely enjoyable, I assure you it's NOT.
However, I am not a mean mommy and hearing him say he wants to leave breaks my heart. I told him this but it didn't stop him.
From walking out the front door, halfway down the street, only to turn around and enter the backyard. Which is where I found him and snapped this adorable picture of him pouting and hiding from me (don't mind our playset - we never finished painting it with the wood sealer and it's now 6 years old - beautiful, I know!).
Fast forward 10 minutes. He hasn't gone far.
That is ds covered with a blanket (in the humid SC heat, nonetheless) laying on his pillow in our driveway. Can you tell he means business?
He has since decided to come in to the house, where he is proceeding to list off his demands if I want him to stay (of course he can't help but giggle because I keep puckering up for kisses that I'm not getting - yet) He can never stay mad at me long :)
Is this parenting thing ever going to get easier?

That is so funny! I think every kid at some point threatens to move out. How long did he stay gone?
LOL! that IS great! haha SO funny how they always come crawling back.
He was back within the half-hour. It's HOT outside! lol
And he sure did come crawling back - he got a LOT of tickling for pulling that one :)
Oh dear bless him and you!
I was gonna suggest trading you for my husband he would LOVE your sons bedroom. He sounds kitted out.
Good luck when he is a teenager!
The pic of him on the swingset is priceless.
I cant help but laugh hysterically at this. I have a soon to be 8 year odl girl and amazing we had this same fight over a book report. Amazing that he is strong enough to stay out for so long though. My daughter just pouts in her room. Adorable pictures andI hope you recieved your much deserved kiss.
ROFL! I remember when I first left home and made sure to pack the pine-sol. I went to live under a bush in front of our condo. I was probably 7 or so. Tommy has a better idea with packing his pillow. Were you dying with laughter?
That is so funny!!! I think it's hilarious how he laid down on the driveway...all covered and everything. I'm glad he's back home safe and sound. :::giggle:::
That is absolutely ADORABLE!! I love the pout on his face!
