A Democrat is born

My 8, almost 9, year old son has decided that he is a "democrat."

Yes, you read that right.

He is a child after my own heart :)

But you are probably wondering how in the world an 8 year old can be a "democrat." I never talk politics with my children. Seriously, how interesting could those issues really be with new episodes of The Suite Life with Zach and Cody coming on weekly! (Oh, and I keep putting democrat in quotation marks because I am not truly labeling my son a democrat...that will be for him to decide in the future).

Anyway, on to why my son is the cutest little boy. Ever.

We were driving home last night from dinner and he asked me who I was voting for in the election.

I told him I was not sure.

Well, I guess the kids at school were talking at school on Thursday, the day after the final debate between Obama and McCain, repeating things they must have heard their parents discussing.

But we all know the grapevine effect - especially when we are talking about 8 year olds!

So this is our conversation as I remember it:

Tommy: Mom, who are you voting for?
Me: I don't know. Why?
Tommy: You have to vote for the one who is going to give $2000 to the poor! What's his name? Obo something?
Me: You mean Obama?
Tommy: YES! Drew and Zoe were talking about how it's bad for everyone but it's NOT. We have to help people with that money.
Me: :::with a heart bursting with pride::: You're right, $2000 would help a lot of people but that's not exactly what Obama said.

Then we had a little conversation about the differences in Democrats and Republicans, which is completely boring, and might even offend a few people considering it came from my own point of view and not an unbiased source ;)

But holy cow - how fun is it that my little man got into a disagreement with his friends at school about a political issue?!?

And the fact that he sided with a liberal point of view just had to make me ask this - are liberals and conservatives actually BORN? Is it some innate feeling that just gets labeled as we grow?

All I know is that my son has such a huge heart and I do not EVER want to see that change :)
